当年第一次听到清唱版本的《Tom's Diner》，直接迷倒：

And I look the other way as they are kissing their hellos

I'm pretending not to see them

Instead I pour the milk

I open up the paper

There's a story of a actor

Who has died while he was drinking

It was no one I had heard of

And I'm turning to the horoscope and looking for the funnies

When I'm feeling someone watching me and so I raise my head

There's a woman on the outside looking inside

Does she see me?

No she does not really see me cause she sees her own reflection

And I'm trying hot to notice that she's hitching up her skirt

And while she's straightening her stockings her hair is getting wet

Oh, this rain it will continue through the morning as I'm listening

To the bells of the cathedral

I'm thinking of your voice...

清唱版

这轻描淡写的风格，跟马致远的《秋思》有一拼：

那时还没有网络，我们一帮小流氓（张玮玮有一次在台北，说，大陆的流氓，跟台湾香港的流氓不一样，没有枪，不用刀，不磕粉，不砍人…… 其实他们只不过是“文艺青年”……）听的是一种叫“打口带”的东西…… Suzanne Nadine Vega 的声音，她的歌词，瞬间把一群小流氓打晕。

其后的许多年里，这首歌一直在我的录音机里， walkman 里， MP3 里，iPod 里，iPhone 里，车载存储里…… 前后陆陆续续收集了不知道多少个版本，包括别人翻唱的，包括她在各个年龄阶段重唱的……
